How to Make Haymaker’s Switchel: A Homemade Energy Drink

By accident, I discovered Switchel.  I saw it mentioned in a blog somewhere and decided I had to try it.  Now, I’m hooked!

It is a drink that has basic ingredients, it’s cheap to make and once you taste it, you’ll be hooked too!

How to Make Switchel

Switchel contains vitamin B6, potassium, magnesium and manganese.  It cools you off and puts some electrolytes back in you after you’ve been working in your gardens in the hot summer sun!  The sugars give you energy, while the ginger warms your stomach, so you can drink until you’re not thirsty.  I think of it as a daily “tonic” that gives me a little boost!

I also like to take it with me when I go places.  I just pour some into a canning jar and use a plastic lid to close it.  SO much better than pop (or soda…depending on where you are😉 ).

There are different ways to make Switchel, but this is the one I especially like:

Switchel Recipe

2 quarts water

1/2 cup honey

1/2 cup molasses

1/2 cup apple cider vinegar

5-6 slices of ginger

Stir until honey and molasses dissolve.  Chill.  Enjoy.

How to Make Switchel

Time to mix up a big pitcher of Switchel and go sit under the shade trees!

2 quarts of Switchel costs me about $1.75, which is about the same price of a 2 liter bottle of pop.

BENEFITS:

  • Healthy alternative to pop or energy drinks
  • You know the ingredients
  • You can tweak the recipe to your personal taste
